Long Term Holds
Quite often we seem to get “accused” of playing only very short term trades, and ignoring the longer term holds. To a certain extent that’s true. Not because we have anything against long term holds, in fact we have several of them in place as we speak. No, the reason we haven’t been focusing on longer term holds lately, is precisely what we saw happen in February.
The “correction” that hit in February was the single fastest drop of 10% the market’s really ever seen, and it was obscenely overdue. If you look back at the history of the DOW, what you often see is that somewhere between 8,9, or 10 years into a rising market, it changes direction. Sometimes it’s a simple correction, and sometimes it’s a crash.

Hello everyone, welcome to yet another Friday.

Another wild day of big dips and big recoveries.  I had a hunch we'd see that, as this is what I said at the 1:15pm update yesterday:

So, we're supposed to get the Presidents declaration on tariff's this afternoon. I imagine that as they leak info, we'll see some more pops and drops. But I also think that the tariff situation will not be as ugly as many think and that they'll end up liking the final product

Good morning all, and what a wild morning it portends to be.

The futures were up smartly overnight, but then they got "silly" high for a while. The reason? Well in what can only be called a diplomatic victory, Kim Jung Un of North Korea fame has formally hinted that he'd be okay denuclearizing if his regime was allowed to remain stable.  Kim also held out an olive branch to South Korea, suggesting that they should work hard to reunify the peninsula, and attain peace.

So, It’s 2018 Now

It’s Monday morning. Right this moment, things don’t feel a lot different than yesterday morning and yet the calendar tells me that it is a “new year”.  Since I didn’t go out and party on New Years Eve, I’m not terribly tired nor hung over. That’s a blessing.  So, what does this thing called 2018 have in store for us?

A lot I imagine.

At the bottom of every letter, there’s a “donate” button. I put it there about a year ago, because we had folks over the years that tell us “we don’t do any investing, but I like reading your letters, is there any way I can toss you a few bucks?”

Well this week I got notice of a donation, and figured it had to be a mistake. I’m not talking thousands, but it was quite large, and I contacted the donor. I said thank you for the donation, but surely you made a mistake. He said there was no mistake, and that he has enjoyed our letters and wanted to help keep them coming.  But what got me all emotional was when he said he forwards my letters to his daughters, because he thinks some of them are important enough that he wants them to read it.

Good morning everyone, and welcome to a new day.

NOTE>>  Today my wife is throwing a little Holiday party for her employees to drop by the office, pick up a gift, and have a bite to eat. So chances are good that I won't be posting an afternoon update, I'll probably be helping her host her little gathering.

Good morning everyone, welcome to Wednesday.

I'm not sure what planet we're on right now.  I used to think that we were all hanging out on earth, and things were pretty much at least in the realm of normality. But over the last few months, reality has left the scene and it has been replaced with something foreign.

Hope for the Best
I’ve said this a few times in various newsletters of the past.  The fact is, that your entire existence is reliant on other people. Without the drilling, there’s no oil, no gas. Without the electric company, there’s no power. Without the farmers, there’s no food. Without the town/county most would have no water. On and on it goes. Where would you get rope or a rubber band, or a piece of wire, or a new knife, if “someone else” didn’t make it? While you seem to be independent, you are connected to the system at the hip.  We’re like one huge organism, and each part of it interacts with other parts to keep the whole thing alive.

Good morning all, welcome back from your weekend. As always I hope it was a really good one for you all. My wife had a fun day Saturday, as she wanted to get a new dress for the wedding she's going to in NJ. Her niece is getting married in November and she spent the day finding just the right dress and accessories.

Good morning all, we've made it to Friday. Oh and Friday the 13th no less. I guess that's fitting for an October, considering Halloween and this spooky market.

So they used yesterday as their pause day. The DOW faded off about 30 points, the S&P fell by about 4. Is that significant? In a 23K market, that's not even a rounding error.
