Trading Questions

I’m going to take a slightly different route today, because lately I’ve been getting some really good questions about “trading” the market, and I figure it makes a lot of sense to try and answer them to a larger audience. So, for today let’s talk trading.

One question I just got was in response to a post I had made where I said that “for the average investor, it is usually not wise to trade during the first hour of the day, commonly known as amateur hour.”  The question was basically “why don’t you trade during the first hour of the open market?”  So let’s dissect that and see why.

They did it again.

Yesterday the market tried to work its way higher, but ran into a gob of resistance starting around 2087, and couldn't get through. So it faded all the way down to RED by late afternoon. But because illusion is the name of the game right now, in the final moments they rallied the troops and pulled off an 18 point DOW gain and a fractional gain in the S&P.

It gets old, no? Yes.

Good morning folks, we've made it to Friday and what an amazingly strange week it's been.

Yesterday was something of an enigma. At the noon hour, the market was struggling to hold green, with the DOW coming down from about 100 points, to just +39 points at one moment. But then shortly after 1, they started pushing things higher and higher and by the time the bell rang to close out the show , we'd gained 215 DOW points, but more importantly, an incredible 29 S&P points, which pushed the S&P up and over the resistance of 2020.

Morning all, welcome to Tuesday...

Yesterday was indeed weaker in the final hours than I thought they'd let it get. So again, let's review something here so we're clear...

The market is just a stone toss away from "all-time" highs. It is my contention that those highs will not be surpassed easily, if at all. Yes read that again, I think the all-time highs might be a top.  At the very least, I think they'll be very hard to get past.  That said however, I did and still do think they might at least try a few times to attack those highs and "see" how stiff the resistance is.

Morning all....

Yesterday the market put in a long boring session which is about what we expected. We also thought the insane drive to NASDAQ 5K would continue and sure enough, while the DOW and S&P were soggy, the tech index did pretty well.

I'm typing this pretty early today as I have to get on the road soon, but at 6:30 am we've got the DOW and S&P futures slightly red. So what's today going to bring?

Good morning all, welcome to Christmas week!

For the most part the Christmas week generally brings us a low volume move slightly higher. Most of the upper level traders are already in the Hamptons celebrating the Holiday's, leaving the junior traders to "don't do anything stupid".

But because the volumes are so low, it is fairly easy for a single big order to order to move the underlying stock, so we oft times see outsized moves in single issues.
