Now the wait

This will be one of the shortest Financial Intelligence Reports of the year. Why? We’re in a holding pattern.

Just 4 sessions ago, we had set new all-time highs. But since then things have faded a bit, as market participants wait to see what’s going to happen with 1) Iran and the back and forth there, and 2) the weekend chat between Trump and China’s Xi.

War

In 1970, while the US was still mucking it out in Vietnam, Edwin Starr released a single called “War”. It was a catchy, raspy, tune, perfectly in line with the times, as thousands of our men and women slugged it out in Southeast Asia.

A few of the lines stand out to me:

Friday. Yes indeed it's another Friday. But at least this Friday is sort of special.

Today is the longest sunlight day of the year. The summer solstice. After today, we will begin losing from 30 seconds to a minute of daylight per day. You won't notice it for about a month, but thenone day you'll be outside in the evening and be surprised that it's starting to get dark "so early"

Well isn't this something. I wake up this am, flip on a monitor and the futures are up 232?  Uhm, why?

Yes Powell folded and will be cutting rates. We all know that. But he hasn't yet.  Okay, so maybe they know something big is coming out of the G20? I don't know.

Good morning all, we've made it to another Friday.

So, yesterday we heard from the Trump Admin that they're pinning the blame on the ship bombings on Iran. That got oil off the deck, but didn't really send it "higher", it just came off its lows. the DOW put in 101 points, the S&P gained 11.  Pretty good for rising tensions, no? Yes.

Good morning all, welcome to Wednesday. I'm late, and for a good reason. After my dental surgery Tuesday, I literally got no sleep Tuesday night. So, when I went to bed last night, I was beat.

The next thing I knew, it was 8 am.  Wow. I'm usually awake between 5:30 and 6:30 am.  Not today, I was catching up on badly needed rest.

Hi all.

Back on Tuesday, when those enormous sell programs hit, it certainly raised a lot of eyebrows. It got my attention, because while I understand where the selling came from, I still didn't understand the why they did it. Why did they decide on a random Tuesday that risk was now toxic and they needed to cut their exposure by 40% or more?

Hello all, welcome back from your weekend. I'm hopeful it was a good one for you all. Ours was pretty good overall, as my wife attended an industry show on Saturday, and I got to do "man stuff" around the house. ( ha)  Sunday was better however, as we got a chance to visit an exotic bird rescue, followed up by some good food and drink in the afternoon. All in all, a decent weekend.

Morning all, welcome to Wednesday.

Okay, so Trump went ahead and tore up the Iran nuclear agreement. The market didn't quite know what to think about that, as his decision wasn't supposed to take place until after May 12. So the algo's didn't quite know what to do with this new news.

Hi all, welcome to...May.  I find it a bit hard to swallow that we've actually burned through 4 entire months of this year already. Wow.  But it is, what it is, and here we are. May 1.

Yesterday turned out to be an interesting affair. After being up 150 points in the early going, things ran out of gas and in the afternoon, we went decidedly red. How red? we ended the day with the DOW down 148 and the S&P down 21. That's quite the reversal.
