Good morning all, we've made it to Friday and even this is somewhat different.....

Last night wrapped up the Democratic convention. I listened to Hillary's speech, and while I'm biased against her, I tried to keep a level head and listen for substance.  Nope, I didn't get any. At one point it appeared like her hubby Bill had actually fallen asleep. I can't blame him.

We just wrapped up the Republican Conventions and it ended with a speech by Donald Trump. The left has gone apoplectic over the things that were said, and ended up calling it “dark” and “doom and gloom”. It was nothing of the sort.

Tom Brokaw had this to say...“Others looking in are going to see someone they will only think as a demagogue of some kind.” George Stephanopoulos, a former Democratic operative, echoed his colleague Chuck Todd: “He [Trump] painted a dark picture of where America stands today.” For emphasis, Stephanopoulos repeated, “And Martha Raddatz, a pretty dark speech.” Chuck Todd labeled, “I thought it was an extraordinarily dark speech.” Republican operative Nicolle Wallace lamented, “We are now represented as a party by a man who believes in protectionism, isolationism and nativism.”

Hi everyone, welcome back from your weekend.  As is my custom, I hope yours was as wonderful as it could be.  In the big picture this will mean absolutely nothing, but it is sort of "neat"to me.  The wife and I have a routine on Sunday's and in that routine part of it is that we take a 5 mile bike ride which terminates at Casperson Beach.  Once we make it to the park, we lock up the bikes and take about a one mile stroll down the beach and lay out our beach towels.  Casperson is the "shark tooth" capital of the country and I've literally found several hundred of them. For the most part the bulk of them are about the size of a grown man's thumbnail.

Hello everyone, welcome to another day of "as the world churns"

Last night Europe got rocked hard. That was after Japan got rocked hard.

So what's the issue? Well the problem is that there's a lot of worry that some of the biggest banks, especially Deutsche bank, could be on the verge of failing. And, because all the banking is interconnected, everyone's trying to figure out what kind of "contagion" would occur if a bank that big failed. All across Europe risk spreads are blowing out, as that very contagion fear sweeps the continent.  Spain, Italy, Portugal are all experiencing credit issues, and with Draghi talking about doing "all it takes" they're worried about negative rates making things even worse.

Morning all, we've made it to Friday in what is proving to be quite a bizarre week.

Last night Japan completely took everyone by surprise by announcing they were implementing NIRP.  What's NIRP?  Negative Interest Rate Policy.

Hello everyone, welcome back from your long weekend. ( I hope you did have a long weekend and didn't have to burn it up working!)

Down here on the West coast of Florida, most backyard cookouts got slammed once again with tremendous rains. It has been the wettest year in history down here. Just north of us, they reported that we've gotten over 54 inches of rain this year SO FAR. The average for the whole year is 26. Wow.

Good morning everyone. I hope you all had a great weekend, and the weather wasn't too ugly for you. Last week I had a terrible bout of the flu, which no doubt knocked me for a loop. But by Sunday I figured I was well enough to at least take our walk along the beach. Wow, I couldn't believe how much that virus took out of me. Just a mile into the walk, I had to stop and sit down. I was just exhausted.  (we generally do two miles minimum)

So we stopped where we were, got some sun, and then meandered back at a leisurely pace.  It was worth it, it was a beautiful day.

Somebody Is Wrong

Considering that we’re “smack-dab” in the middle of the Holiday season, I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to sound off on some of the really deep issues that we’re going to need to discuss this year. For now everyone should be enjoying their Holiday season, sharing good times with family and friends, and doing their best to remember the good things in their lives.

That said however, the fact is that “someone” is wrong about things. Either the cheer leading, rah-rah TV people are right and the economy is healing, things are getting better and the nation is about to see a new 10 year expansion….or they’re wrong and the so called doom and gloomers are right. They both can’t be.

The Swiss voted no on bringing their gold home and backing their currency with a 20% weighting. The rich hated the idea, as did the Central banks and they pushed hard to frighten everyone into believing that printing money out of thin air is the only way they can deal with the European Union's woes. So they scared the population into shooting down the initiative. I suspect that in the future, the Swiss people will lament that decision.

Good morning folks, welcome back from the Holiday.

Frankly... I don't know where to start.

Let's start with the Swiss vote. I'm on record saying that I thought the Swiss would come to their senses and pass the gold initiative. If you aren't familiar, here's the short version...when ever 100K people sign a petition the Swiss Government has to allow a vote on it. Some bright folks suggested that the Swiss return to a policy where 20% of their currency is backed by gold and the gold they own is repatriated from NY, France, etc and kept at home.
